Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be one of the top sites in your niche market, to generate traffic that makes your site profitable? For example, you’re selling books and you’re up there next to Amazon, or you have a DIY site and you’re in the same league as Screwfix Direct. With traffic such as those companies get, you’d be making fabulous profits for life.

How to generate traffic… the basics

In order to generate a lot of web traffic to your site, you have to be regularly updating it using content based on keywords to tempt potential visitors. But it is not just visitors we’re after, is it, we need visitors turned customers, which is why generating traffic should be about hooking genuine visitors that stay for a while, rather than attracting those who take a fleeting glance then go and look for better things.

There’s a lot of information on the Internet about how to get it right but here are a few points that will help you on your way:

* Don’t use keywords that are misleading, as you will only attract uninterested visitors and maybe lose out in the long run.

* Post regularly. Once a week is good but, if you can’t post that often, at least make sure that your chosen time of posting is regular. That way, you’re generating traffic and those people are happy with how the site functions and they’ll know how often to call back for more valuable content.

* If you submit articles and blog entries to other related sites and you are allowed to include a link to your own site, you are generating traffic once again and these shared links (you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours) can be so powerful in the scale of networking.

* Many sites have free downloads, so look for any that give you advice on how to link with other sites and how to get your website out there, to be picked up by the genuinely interested public at large.

* Once you’ve got your site up there (maybe not in front of Amazon but, hopefully on the same page), don’t think that it’s now an easy ride. You will have worked hard with keywords, links and content to get ranked highly but you need to continue generating traffic to stay up there.

* All in all, respect your regular visitors, as they are the ones that count and, as long as your website content is good, they will pass the word on to friends, family and colleagues, keeping your ranking high.

Remember, people visit your site because they like what they read and see. To them, you are the expert in your field. That’s why they keep coming back for more, and many of them will start placing orders too!
